Scenic Drives

Nearly every drive is scenic in Rappahannock County, and everyone who lives in or visits the county has special favorites. Skyline Drive along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Shenandoah National Park offers spectacular views of the Shenandoah Valley to the west and Rappahannock County and Virginia's Piedmont Region to the east.

The Blue Ridge Mountains can be viewed from below along Route 231 (F.T. Valley Road) going south from the village of Sperryville, or between Chester Gap and the village of Flint Hill on Route 522. Fodderstack Road between the Town of Washington and Flint Hill is popular with bicyclists. Use the map of Rappahannock County as your guide to explore the many side roads, some of which may be gravel-surfaced, and discover your own favorite scenic drives. There is a more-detailed Roads of Rappahannock County map available for purchase at the Office of Tourism ($1). In addition, copies of the Scenic Roads of Virginia map indicating designated scenic byways, are available free online for download or mailing. They may also be picked up at the Office of Tourism and Virginia Welcome Centers around the state.

Also available for cycling enthusiasts is the new Bicycling in Virgina map. This is another free publication highlighting state recreation and cycling resources around the state, including miles of on- and off-road cycling routes. It is available by mail or download.
